Job/Person Summary

Chair of governors – St Martin’s Church of England (Aided) Primary School

St Martin’s is a small 5-class rural school in the beautiful village of East End, five miles from Newbury. Our strong Christian ethos and community feel drive everything we do. We value each child as a unique individual, nurturing and encouraging them to develop their own skills and talents. Our community of staff, parents, children, governors, and the local church work collaboratively to support each other. This enables us to help our children develop into happy, confident individuals, able to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future.

Our school values of respect, friendship, courage and creativity underpin life at St Martin’s, supporting our children's physical, emotional, social, moral and spiritual development, alongside their academic progress. A love of learning is at the heart of our school; we believe in developing children as lifelong learners, using our learning skills of perseverance, curiosity, reflection, teamwork, resourcefulness and concentration.

Within the last year, our school has been visited by both SIAMS and OFSTED.  We are delighted that both sets of inspectors recognized what is special at St Martin’s and judged our school  to be good.

The governing board provides challenge and support to the school, through the school leaders, to ensure it continues on its current journey. The board consists of 12 members, 7 of whom are Foundation Governors, appointed by the Diocese., However, recent changes to the board membership has opened up an opportunity for us to recruit a new foundation governor who would be willing to take on the role of Chair from September 2024.  We require someone who can build on the board’s recent successes, continue to develop an effective team and help to shape it’s strategic direction.

We are looking for someone who is

We would very much like to hear from those with experience of school governance, ideally as a Chair or Vice-Chair, but the role could also suit someone with professional experience of the education sector, or who has previously taken on a similar role in a voluntary or commercial organisation. Expertise in finance would be particularly welcome, but is not essential. Most importantly we are looking for someone with a passion for education and a desire to help the school achieve success.

The governing board meets 6 times a year, and these meetings are usually held in the early evening. In addition, all governors may be asked to become a member of one of our sub-committees. Governors are also encouraged to visit to the school to undertake monitoring or to support events, such as worships. Governors have access to an extensive training programme, to support them in their role.
